God's desire was to expand His kingdom from heaven into His creation, including the earth. He wanted a royal, ruling family, so He created man. He put him on the earth to rule over it. It was God's intention for His man Adam to rule the earth until Jesus, God's only begotten Son, would come to take up His authority and rule over all His creation. Jesus had already paid the price to be king before the earth was ever created.
Jesus did come, and walked the earth for 33 years. As a man, He willingly went to the cross to die for our sins and redeem mankind back into right standing with God the Father. He was later raised from the dead and ascended back up to heaven. When He completed His work here on earth, He legally took back the authority to rule over His creation that was lost by Adam in the garden of Eden.
He is coming back again, this time to sit on His throne a on earth.
